Half day visit to Corcovado with private guide, the statue of Christ the Redeemer (incl. cog-wheel train)

The hunch-backed Corcovado Mountain is famous for the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer that stands on the mountain's summit.   The tour to Corcovado begins with a drive from the hotel through the traditional suburbs of Cosme Velho with its historic mansions to the cogwheel train station.  A photo stop can be made at Largo do Boticario, a tiny colonial square lovingly restored to its original state. The summit of Corcovado is reached from the train station via the cogwheel railway that was built in 1884.  The 3-mile ascent to the train station at the top takes 20 minutes as you pass steeply through thick vegetation past beautiful butterflies and birds and of course there are the delightful views of the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon below.

corcovado-rio.jpg

Comfortable shoes are a must to climb the steps up to the 122-foot tall Christ Statue with the entire city spread at its feet.  Alternatively, there is also an elevator and escalator service.  Here, at 2300 feet above sea level the view is breathtaking.  All around you can see the city of Rio, Guanabara Bay, the mountains, Sugar Loaf, the nine-mile long Rio-Niteroi Bridge, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon and the wonderful expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

Return to your hotel and the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 3: Rio (B, L)

Pre Tour: 7th Dec 2020

Half Day Tour of Sugar Loaf with private guide (incl. cable car)

Our tour to Sugar Loaf starts with a drive from your hotel along the beaches of Urca, Botafogo and Flamengo.  The Copacabana and Flamengo Embankment was first landscaped in the 1930s and takes you through to Rio Branco in the heart of Rio’s financial district. This is the oldest part of Rio and there are still some cobble stoned streets and squares where you can see the colonial styles of buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, the Opera House and the Gloria Church and monastery.  You will drive past the Lapa Arches, the original aqueduct construction used in the 18th century.  Rio’s famous landmark overlooks the entrance of Guanabara Bay.

Board the cable car at the foot of the mountain for the first stage of the ride up to Urca Hill where a second cable car continues to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain.  Both cable car rides take 3 minutes displaying a superb panorama at two distinct heights. The view from the top is a breathtaking 360º panorama of endless beaches, lush Atlantic rainforest, skyscrapers and glistening water.

Day 4: Iguassu Falls (B)

Pre Tour: 8th Dec 2020

After breakfast, private transfer to the airport for your flight to Foz do Iguazu.

On arrival in Iguassu Falls, private transfer to your hotel for your 2-night stay with breakfast included.

We recommend arriving by early afternoon to allow the afternoon visit of the Brazilian side of the Falls.

Afternoon visit of the Brazilian side (about 2½ /3hrs) – private service

From the Brazilian side you will be able to enjoy the panoramic view of the falls only seen from here.  It is a 1½ km walk which runs part of the way down the cliff near the rim of the falls, giving a stupendous view of the whole Argentine side of the Falls. There are walkways along the banks which take you almost under the powerful Floriano Falls.  From here an elevator carries visitors to the top of the Floriano Falls and to a path leading to Puerto Canoas. There are also smaller access paths for those who prefer to walk. This whole area is now a Unesco World Heritage Site and the incredible humidity generated by the falls creates the perfect environment in which the lush vegetation and fauna thrive in this subtropical rainforest.
