FUll core Itinerary
Location: Katavi National Park
The wilderness of Katavi National Park, located in the western area of Tanzania, is one of the most untouched areas of the entire country, indeed of all East Africa. It offers unspoilt Tanzania Safari wildlife viewing in the country's third-largest national park, in a remote location far off the beaten track. The park is Africa at its most wild: unadulterated bush settings, spectacular views, and rich wildlife. This will be our incredible eclipse viewing location.
Day 1 29 August 2016 Dar es Salaam
On arrival at Dar es Salaam international airport you will be collected by a pre-booked and air-conditioned taxi and transferred to your hotel. Unwind on the terrace by the pool as you overlook the Indian Ocean and get into Swahili time. Dine alfresco, or wander next door to the adjacent Slipway for souvenir shopping and craft markets, and more choice of evening restaurants. Accommodation is provided on a bed and breakfast basis at the Double Tree Hilton at Oysterbay, Dar es Salaam.
Day 2 30 August 2016 Katavi National Park
Have an early breakfast and check out of your room. You will be transferred back to the domestic airport for your private charter flight from Dar es Salaam to Katavi National Park (13 Seater Cessna Caravan). On arrival in Katavi you will be met by your guide and transferred to your accommodation to freshen up and unpack. Enjoy a delicious lunch as you immerse yourselves in the sounds of the bush. In the afternoon, have a shared game drive as you start to explore the total wilderness of the Katavi National Park. Search out the large mammals, primates, reptiles and birds that thrive in this wonderful environment. Katavi is the third largest National Park in Tanzania, but the least visited given its remote Western location. Accommodation is provided on a full board basis within the Katavi National Park. All meals included.
Authentic Tanzania Thousand Star Camp
Accommodation in en-suite mobile safari tents. Wooden beds with comfortable 8 inch mattresses. Bedside table and solar lanterns for reading. En suite bathroom includes flushing toilet (chemical), hot water bucket showers with excellent pressure, sink table and mirror. Towel and clothes rail. Shared lounge area and camp fire. Dining tent is open sided. All meals are included on a full board basis. Offer includes soft drinks, tea/coffee and water, alcoholic drinks with meals (beer and wine). Laundry services included. Activities include 2 x game drives daily, or 1 long full day game drive with bush lunch. National park and special camping fees are included. With no ambient light around the camp, this is the perfect location for star gazing each evening. The sky at night in Tanzania is magnificent, with the Milky Way clearly visible much of the time. It is a truly wonderful experience to sit up at night whilst on safari and listen to the sounds of the bush while star gazing.
Day 3 31 August 2016 Katavi National Park
Katavi is by far the best place to see Roan antelope, and mighty herds of buffalo with up to 5,000 animals. A single herd can form a column of more than 3 km in length. Lions are present in high numbers, along with hyena and leopards. Even Wild Dogs can be found in the park – but they are a rare sighting. You’ll see a lot of Elephant, mega pods of hippos and fantastic giant crocodiles. The tens of thousands of large mammals present really make this the last wilderness of Tanzania. You can expect two half day game drives today, but most importantly you will have the chance to set up and test your equipment in advance of the eclipse for the next morning. After your day of game drives along the Katuma River or by the lakes, return to camp in the evening for dinner and drinks under the African skies. Tonight you will have a final briefing by the Eclipse Expert who will be with you throughout the tour. Accommodation is provided on a full board basis within the Katavi National Park. All meals included
Day 4 1 September 2016 Annular Eclipse Day!
Today is Eclipse Day! You will be woken early and depart your camp or lodge with a packed bush breakfast. Get to the site at 6.30 and set up your equipment. The annular eclipse starts at 6.50am and the eclipse is scheduled to reach its maximum at 8.38am. The annular eclipse will last for some 3 minutes, and the end of the retreating partial eclipse will be at 10.35 am. After the eclipse you will have a short game drive back to your accommodation for a celebration lunch.

In the afternoon, have another game drive as you switch your lenses back to wildlife mode! Capture buffalo wallowing, crocs bathing, hippos fighting and the big cats on a hunt. Return to the camps for a celebration dinner under the stars. Accommodation is provided on a full board basis within the Katavi National Park. All meals included.
Day 5 2 September 2016 Katavi to Dar es Salaam
Today after a final breakfast in the bush you will be transported to the airstrip for your private shared charter flight back to Dar es Salaam (13 Seater Cessna Caravan).
