STAR BEDS IN AFRICA

Natalie Harman

There really is something very special about an African sky. Maybe you share a fascination for the wonders surrounding our vast universe, or maybe you simply love gazing up at the galaxies? More and more people are looking for a pristine wilderness experience that is as personal as it is memorable. If this resonates – then star beds are for you.

What are they?  - simply put, they are your comfortable and luxurious outdoor bedroom, under the stars. The ultimate in romance.

Each venue with star beds varies a little but what remains consistent is the darkness of an African sky with the Southern Cross constellation glittering above. The differing venues offer diversity - you can opt to camp in the African bush fully immersed in the sights and sounds, the calls of the hyenas and jackals, the chatter of the birds at dusk and again at dawn, or choose the barren desert with its mountain silhouettes. Another option is a star bed on the sand beaches of a vast lake or, what about sleeping out on an ancient salt pan?

Our selection of Star Beds offer something very special.

NKWICHI - LAKE MALAWI - MOZAMBIQUE SIDE

The perfect way to sleep outside, under the stars and beside Lake Malawi is to stay in the aptly named ‘Lake of Stars’ Bed. Nkwichi Lodge is dedicated to conserving the pristine lakeshore and virgin wilderness in which its located and it is closely entwined in the fabric of the local community.  At Nkwichi, you can be sure of a 5 star experience and you will leave with an indelible imprint of an authentic Africa in your heart.

Here, you can just ‘be’ as the sun slips gently across the water, silhouetting the distant mountains of Malawi, as a thick band of orange gives way to blue. You will see the first flickering of an African night sky herald a gallery of cascading shooting stars. The fireflies will glitter in the trees and the fire crackle all whilst a sense of timelessness drifts through your mind. And if sitting under an African star studded sky isn’t enough, combine this with a romantic dinner on the secluded beaches, enjoy a night cruise or uncover the universe’s secrets through the lens of a provided telescope.

MAKANYANE, SOUTH AFRICA

In Madikwe National Park, Mayanyane is a gem waiting to be found. Can you imagine being located where nothing stands in the way of the sights and sounds of the African Bush at night?

Makanyane offers guests the ultimate nocturnal bush experience of sleeping out under the stars on their ‘Star View Sleep-out Hide’. This incredible Sleep-out Hide gives a thrilling experience of overlooking the waterhole and views across Madikwe Game Reserve, whilst falling asleep beneath a canopy of a million stars, surrounded by lanterns and listening to a lullaby of roaring lions and laughing hyenas.

The enclosed first level of the Sleep-out Hide has a covered lounge area and a balcony. The upper level is open to the sky and it is here that soft, warm beds are made up under mosquito nets for a star gazing sleep out. Drinks, snacks, torches and spotlights to watch the game are all supplied. A two-way radio to ensure constant contact with lodge staff is available if needed for peace of mind. The Hide’s fully enclosed and secure ground level has ablutions facilities.

KULALA DESERT LODGE, SOSSUSVLEI DESERT, NAMIBIA

The kulalas (broadly meaning sleeping places) at Kulala Desert Lodge each have their own rooftop sleep-out platform above the reed and canvas chalets. Here bedrolls are made up for you so that you can sleep out under the desert sky.  Kulala Desert Lodge lies close to Sossusvlei so this is not a big wildlife area but the sleep-out allows you to experience one of the clearest night skies in the world with no light pollution or much chance of rain in the desert.

KALAHARI PLAINS CAMP, BOTSWANA

The Kalahari is famous for its clear night skies, and with no light pollution it is the ideal spot from which to view the incredible formations of the stars and planets. At the Kalahari Plains Camp, their guides are known to dabble with astronomy and will take their guests out on a tour through the constellations.
Then you will have the comfortable and freeing experience of sleeping out under the starry starry skies of the Kalahari. These star beds are on the roof of your personal unit, high off the ground, where you will be lulled to sleep by the sounds of Africa, and your view from all angles is only the sheet of the stars above you.

JACK'S CAMP, BOTSWANA

Explorer and anthropologist Jack Bousfield had heard that the ancient salt pans of the Makgadikgadi were a place where only idiots went – because there was nothing there. So, in typical Bousfield style, he made it his home. Today, his son's chic, colonial-style camp (Jacks Camp) is surrounded by thousands of acres of sand, salt and palms, buzzes with guests who come specifically to experience that nothingness: the endless sand, the rare desert lion, the oases of palms and horizons so enormous that on some days they appear curved. Sundowners are taken out in the saltpans, dinners set out on a remote desert spot – and, on occasion, beds are set out facing east in the sands so guests awake facing the rising sun. Glorious!
