02 May: Arrive Cape Town
Transfer to The Pepper Club for 3 nights’ accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis. Located in the centre of Cape Town, with easy walking access to excellent restaurants and bars, this is a great base from which to explore the city

05 May: Sutherland
Depart Cape Town after an early breakfast bound for Sutherland. With a brief stop at in Matjiesfontein we will arrive in Sutherland at midday. After checking into your accommodation, we will depart to the Observatory for a tour of the science centre and the different domes – including SALT. There will be an evening dinner at “Cluster d` Hotel” (drinks own account) followed by a departure of 20h00 for star gazing at Sterland.
06 May: Prince Albert star gazing
After breakfast we leave for Prince Albert. This is a scenic drive and we will stop for coffees and teas. There will be a light lunch at Prince Albert Olive Farm, and then we will depart to our accommodation at Abrahamskraal. We will arrive in time to observe the sunset with sundowners before dinner. At around 20h00 we will star gaze through telescopes.
07 May: new moon
After breakfast, we will travel into Prince Albert for sightseeing and the famous Red Bus tour. We will include visits to the AVPPVA ostrich egg shop, wine tasting “Soet Karoo” as well as lunch at the Swartberg Hotel and a visit to the photography exhibition. At around 17h00 we return to Abrahamskraal to set up cameras and telescopes for an evening of Astro Photography. (Tonight is the New Moon)

08 May: Swartberg pass
After breakfast, we depart for Oudtschoorn, crossing the famous Swartberg pass (subject to weather conditions). We stop to visit the Cango Caves; we will arrive at De Zeekoe Guest farm in time for dinner. Tonight we are joined by a local Astronomer who will give us a talk and prepare us for viewing the transit of Mercury.
May 09: Meerkats and the Transit of Mercury
We join the meerkats as they forage for food in the open before returning to DeZeekoe for breakfast. At midday we have the opportunity to view the Transit of Mercury. A transit of Mercury across the Sun takes place when the planet Mercury comes between the Sun and the Earth and Mercury is seen as a small black dot moving across the face of the Sun. A telescope with solar filters will be provided and our Astronomer will guide us and provide input. Only the first half of the transit will be visible. Dinner at De Zeekoe in the evening.
May 10: Private Game Reserve
You’ll have a morning transfer by road to Samara Private Game Reserve for two nights of game watching and dark sky photography. All meals included.
